SRI KRISHNADEVARAYA UNIVERSITY Varsity rejects VC's recruits
The VC on January 27, 2010, issued the appointment orders to 29 candi- dates for teaching posts without even taking the approval of the executive council.
The executive coun cil of the Sri Krishnade- varaya University-Ananta- pur, on Saturday, decided to cancel the recruitments to the post of assistant profes- sor made by the vice-chan- cellor, Ms Kusuma Kumari, due to “gross irregularities” in the selection process.
However, since there were differences within the mem- bers of the executive coun- cil, the matter has been referred to the state govern- ment. The government is to take a final decision on the issue. The state government is likely to make a formal announcement next week.
The state government con- vened an emergency meet- ing of the SKU executive council at the APSCHE office in Masab Tank on Saturday.
Scores of policemen were deployed as several stu- dents’ unions held demon- strations in front of the APSCHE office demanding that the VC be sacked for resorting to malpractices in the selection process.
Tension prevailed as activists from the SFI, AISF and the MRPS tried to enter the office premises. Police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the agitating activists.
Meanwhile, some profes- sors, who had secured jobs in the recruitment drive, threatened to commit sui- cide if the government abol- ished the notification.
The SKU controversy began when Ms Kumari ini- tiated the process of recruit- ment for filling 29 teaching posts in SKU in the second week of September 2009.
Several political leaders and aspirants questioned the timing of recruitment argu- ing that there was no need for such a hurry as the entire state was still mourning the tragic death of the then CM, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
The academic activities in the university came to a halt on September 2009 as sev- eral students’ unions called for frequent bandhs against the maladministration of the VC.
However, the VC on Janu- ary 27, 2010, issued the appointment orders to 29 candidates for teaching posts without even taking the approval of the execu- tive council, the highest governing body in any uni- versity.
The then registrar, Dr Ravindranath, refused to issue the orders. The VC had then immediately replaced him and issued appointment letters.
